Xeomin vs Botox – What’s The Difference?

happy lady 640

Tired of seeing fine lines and wrinkles on your face, but don’t want or are unable to have Botox treatments? Consider trying Xeomin. Like Botox, it makes your skin look youthful, but uses a different formula.

Botox and Xeomin are two types of injectable neurotoxins that are FDA-approved for minimizing unwanted lines and wrinkles. Many people think that Botox and Xeomin are basically the same thing, but in reality there are some significant differences between the two products.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is one of the wrinkle-fighting treatments known as neuromodulators. These injectables smooth over crow’s feet, forehead lines, and other wrinkles and lines, leaving your face looking more rested and youthful. Best of all, a Xeomin treatment gives you the results you want with no downtime following the injection.

How Does Xeomin Work?

As your skin ages, it loses some of its elasticity, and wrinkles begin to form. When you frown or squint, the muscles between your eyebrows contract, causing the skin to fold and furrow. These repeated contractions can cause continuous frown lines.

The active ingredient in Xeomin, Botulinum toxin type A, acts on nerve endings in muscles to prevent muscle fibers from contracting. By reducing these contractions, Xeomin can temporarily reduce the lines between your eyebrows.

What Are the Similarities Between Botox and Xeomin?

Xeomin and Botox are FDA approved for eliminating forehead wrinkles that occur due to raising one’s eyebrows and squinting. Other similarities:

  • Both effectively eliminate expression lines and wrinkles that occur due to repeated muscle contractions involved in everyday facial movements.
  • Both relax targeted facial muscles. When injected into the muscle they temporarily block the nerve impulses that are needed for contraction, resulting in a decrease in movement and reduction of lines or wrinkles in the area.
  • Both are temporary. They wear off in 3 to 6 months, and the nerve impulses begin to reach the muscle again, causing contractions and wrinkles to appear again.

What Are the Advantages of Xeomin?

Xeomin is a “naked” neurotoxin. This means that Xeomin contains only a single ingredient (botulinum toxin A), while Botox includes various protective proteins clustered around the active molecule. Since Xeomin uses a single ingredient and no proteins, there is no risk of having an allergic reaction to the proteins.

Another difference is that some people can develop immunity to Botox, which diminishes its effectiveness. This happens because the immune system can recognize the protein casing of the Botox molecules and develop antibodies against them.

Since Xeomin doesn’t contain any protein casing, it has the advantage of not triggering an immune response that could lower its effectiveness.
